B + E Trailer and Caravan Driver Training

AIM Commercial Services Ltd is able to offer Trailer and Caravan driver training. If you passed your driving test after January 1997, you will not hold the B + E licence you require to tow heavier trailers or caravans.

You will be required to take an additional driving test in order to gain entitlement (+E) to tow a trailer or caravan with a vehicle and trailer/caravan combined weight of 3.5 tonne and over, up to 8.25 tonnes.

Motorhome Manoeuvring Course, duration – 1 day (using your own vehicle)
Driving exercises with instructor critique
Defensive driving
General principles affecting the larger type vehicle
Manoeuvring exercises
General advice on driving and confidence building

The B + E test preparation and testing, duration – 2 days

Things you will learn during the training:

Expert handling of controls, use of correct road procedure, anticipation of the actions of other road users and appropriate action, sound judgement of speed, distance, timing and general road positioning, consideration for the convenience and safety of other road users, safety precautions on entering the vehicle, move away straight ahead or at an angle making normal stops, uphill start, downhill start, approaching and turning right and left hand corners, dealing with road junctions, dealing with crossroads. Meeting, crossing the path of, overtaking other vehicles, allowing adequate clearance. Dealing with pedestrian crossings, giving appropriate signals in a clear and unmistakable manner.

During the test you will be asked to demonstrate:

  • An eye sight test
  • You will be asked ‘show me tell me’ questions
  • A manoeuvring test
  • A braking test
  • A 60 minute drive to the same standard as the Category B car test
  • Un-coupling and re-coupling exercise
Certification

Assessment is ongoing by the instructor along with questioning each day. A certificate will be issued after successful completion of the written and practical assessments. No external assessors are required. If you continue onto the B + E testing your current driving licence will be updated to show the new category.

Numbers

A maximum of 2 operators can be accommodated on each of the courses; all learners must hold a full UK Category B licence. If you choose to use your own vehicles, you must have proof of MOT testing and insurance documentation.
